Stitching troubleshooting
Fix puckering, gaps, thread breaks and outline problems.
Most stitching problems come from the setup rather than the file. Work through this list before re-stitching.
Puckering or wavy fabric
- Use cut-away stabilizer on knits, T-shirts and sweatshirts.
- Hoop fabric and stabilizer together, drum-tight but not stretched.
- Add temporary spray adhesive or an extra layer of stabilizer on soft fabrics.
Outline doesn't line up
- Usually the fabric shifted in the hoop. Hoop more firmly or use a sticky stabilizer.
- Don't pull the hoop or garment while the machine is stitching.
- Support heavy garments so they don't drag the hoop.
Gaps between fill areas
- Check the design hasn't been resized by more than about 10%.
- Turn off automatic density or "optimise" settings on your machine or software.
Thread breaks or shreds
- Change the needle — use a 75/11 embroidery needle for most fabrics.
- Re-thread the machine with the presser foot up.
- Slow the machine down for small lettering and dense areas.
Stitches sink into towels or fleece
Use a water-soluble topper on top of the fabric so the stitches sit on the surface.
Long jump threads
Jump stitches between areas are normal. Most machines trim them automatically; otherwise trim them carefully after stitching.
